How options and principal amounts are kept apart
Method H5, H6. Version 1.0, .
Puts, calls and face amounts never enter a share count or % of portfolio.
Worked examples describe the reference filings used to check this method. Counts are tied to the dated reference data and may differ from current site coverage. Example pages become available as their filings are imported.
The rule
A 13F row with PUTCALL set to Put or Call is an option. Its shares and value describe the underlying stock, not the premium paid. Put or call is part of every key, so an option row is never summed with the shares of the same security. Options are listed in their own table and stay out of % of portfolio, the top 10 weight and the largest buys and sells.
A row with SSHPRNAMTTYPE PRN states a face amount (notes, convertibles) in dollars, not a number of shares. A face amount is never added to a share count, and principal amounts get their own table too.
How often
In the SEC data set 01jun2026 to 31aug2026: 64,778 call rows and 58,305 put rows, 3.2% of all rows, and 16,553 PRN rows, 0.4% (DS ยง1.4).
Worked example
Brigade Capital Management, LP filed its 13F-HR for the quarter ended 2026-06-30 as 0000919574-26-005183 with 15 rows. It holds 328,745 common shares of Lantheus Holdings, worth $36,484,120, and $43,417,000 face of Lantheus 2.625% notes, worth $62,459,878. The face amount stays out of the share count: the fund page shows 328,745 shares in the holdings table and the notes under principal amounts. The same filing holds puts on 3,000,000 shares of an iShares 20 year Treasury bond ETF, reported at $259,260,000. That is the value of the underlying shares, more than the whole share portfolio of $152,900,544, which is why options never enter % of portfolio.
