About David Shaw

Shaw earned a Stanford PhD in 1980 and taught computer science at Columbia before leaving in 1986 to pursue computational finance. He founded D. E. Shaw in 1988; the firm began above a New York bookstore with six employees. Its current description assigns day-to-day operations to an executive committee while retaining Shaw’s involvement in selected strategic decisions. Most of his time now goes to computational biochemistry as chief scientist of D. E. Shaw Research. He began that scientific work in 2001 and assembled its research team from 2002, connecting his academic, investment and scientific careers.
